Punched by a patient(ED)

Hi i’m one of the nurses in ED(Emergency Department). I was doing a bank shift and one of patients punched me on my face. I was doing my medications and one of my colleagues was trying to stop an elderly patient when the pt was trying to leave. As we get a lots of dementia patients and confused ones, i thought it was one of them and decided to help my colleague. I went there and told the pt “Let’s go back to the trolley” and he punched my face right away.

My colleague called the security and i was bleeding from my lips. Thank god my teeth were fine as he punched my mouth.

The lead nurse came to me right away as there were a lot of senior nurses helping my department because there were so many patients on the corridor and saw that i was bleeding. And they were checking whether i’m alright or not and i said i’m fine but they were saying you are definitely not okay and they booked me in. One of ED doctors saw me and said looked fine and documented. I came back to break right away as i was confused and stressed.

After that i told NiC that i don’t think i will be able to concentrate on working.

Now i’m sitting in my car, writing this one and can’t think straight and don’t know what to do. I felt like i was supposed to document on Epic but that patient was already discharged and i already left the department.

Stupid me, as I’m financially not free, i’m more worried about my bank shifts already booked as in our ED, we are not allowed to do banks for 2 weeks if we call sicks. I’m picking up one bank shift per a week regardless i work permanently in ED(37.5hrs per a week)

Can you guys give me advice please?
