What keeps jets from being able to go straight into space?

I understand they simply just aren't able to reach escape velocity, but why is that? What makes reaching escape velocity so hard? If a jet is able to take off and reach 30,000 feet in seconds, what causes it to hit a wall and not be able go any further? Lack of oxygen? Does the atmosphere just get too thin for the wings to keep it the plane in the air?
