People who have FWB, how did it start?

I’ve always wondered how people end up becoming FWB. Does it usually start with being regular friends, or does it begin directly as FWB? Just the idea of asking a friend terrifies me — what if it makes things awkward between us? And if you do ask, how can you tell if the other person is also interested?
