Losing tips because of “rising food costs”

I work at a Subway in Alberta, Canada. My manager told us that we will be losing the tipling feature on our register because of “rising food costs”. My store and a bunch of others are owned by a single company. How are tips costing the company money? I thought they came from the customers.
