How Nigeria ACTUALLY Works: The Power of Escalation
I've seen and heard from a lot of frustrated Nigerians on how things don't work especially here.
Here goes my story on electricity.
January 7: Fire destroyed my prepaid meter. I diligently reported it, submitted all required forms for direct connection while awaiting replacement. Did everything right! ✅
January 18: Plot twist! DISCO staff shows up with a disconnection notice featuring his PERSONAL BANK ACCOUNT details. Wanted me to pay directly to him instead of through official channels.
February 28: They cut my power, falsely accusing me of "meter bypass," "tampering," and "illegal reconnection" - for a meter that no longer existed because of FIRE! The direct connection was THEIR OWN SOLUTION! 🤦♀️
During this period, I started sending communication to all channels the DISCOS' ethics department, the NERC Forum Office for the state and NERC HQ ... never even went to their office.
As soon as NERC HQ got my complaint.... Like magic, I started receiving calls left back and centre from the DISCO. I was reconnected immediately with apologies
They are also bringing a new prepaid meter soon! 🎯 Which I did not even ask for.
The REAL lesson? In Nigeria, the system CAN work, but you must:
- Know the proper escalation channels (NERC in this case)
- Document EVERYTHING meticulously
- Stand your ground against corruption... you may suffer removal of service
- Formally escalate when necessary
- Be persistent
- Be patient (This is the main issue... I was without light for a weekend)
Don't let corrupt officials win. Report them. The proper authorities DO exist and CAN work when properly engaged.
