Extend NYC Public School Spring Break to include Easter Monday (petition)

The Issue

I'm a parent and special-ed teacher in NYC, the most diverse city in the world. It's a place where different cultures, religions, and traditions coexist. But currently, our public school system doesn't fully represent this diversity. Specifically, our public school spring break doesn't include Easter Monday (04/21/25).

Easter Monday is a significant holiday for many families in our city, and historically it has been recognized in the public-school calendar. Last year, the schools provided an Easter-weekend holiday spanning Good Friday through Easter Monday.

By incorporating Easter Monday into the public school’s spring break, we exhibit our city's respect for its diverse traditions and cultures. Easter is a time for reflection and family gatherings, values which every New Yorker believes in. There is a significant number of New Yorkers for whom Easter Monday holds profound importance, which calls for us to acknowledge and accommodate this holiday in our school calendar. Around 80% of Americans celebrate Easter, underscoring the significance of this holiday (source: Statista).

Inclusivity means recognizing and celebrating our differences. As such, this petition is calling for the extension of the New York City public school spring break to include Easter Monday, to allow all families to celebrate their traditions without interruption. I ask you to support this change and sign our petition. Show that NYC respects and values the traditions and cultures of its people. Let's ensure our school calendar is a reflection of the diverse city that we love.
