So what's the deal with palicoes?

What is the actual lore behind palicoes?

Hunters "hire" them to throw them into suicidal situations time and time again but why do they agree to this? I've never actually paid a palico. Sure some (like the ace palico) might be doing it for the sport but the only thing I, as a hunter, actually give them is a roof over their head.

Most felynes seem fairly cowardly so why would they willingly become palicoes and risk their lives for nothing?
