Struggling with shin splints
I’m training for my next half marathon and I’ve gotten shin splints again. As you can see from my training history, I came back off holiday in August and started training again for my first half marathon. I then got shin splints so I lowered my weekly mileage. I then had the great north run (half marathon) in September, I didn’t get the best time as my training was hindered by the shin splints. After I had finished this half marathon a couple of easy weeks to recover. Last week I started training for my next half marathon in November, I ran 17 miles in the week and once again I have shin splints. I have bought proper running shoes, tie a runners knot, stretch before and after the run and I still keep getting shin splints.
I think the cause is me increasing the weekly mileage too soon and I need to increase it more gradually. However, I’m no running expert at all so I wanted some of your opinions.
Today is the 11th of October and my next half marathon is the 10th of November. I plan on having a week or two to recover my shins and in the meantime I will be doing lots of swimming and cycling to maintain my cardio. But it’s not the same as running. Is there anything else you guys can recommend to get me ready for race day without ruining my shins again?
I really want to fix this issue as I have booked up to do a full marathon (Manchester marathon) in April 2025. I’m worried that my mind is willing but my body is not, if I can’t stick to a half marathon training plan without getting shin splints then I think I’ll struggle to train for a full marathon.
