Is violence in Malayalam films contributing to crime rates in Kerala?
There has been a lot of discussion about whether violent Malayalam films are influencing crime rates in Kerala. The idea is that films that glorify violence might be encouraging more criminal behavior. But does this argument hold up when we look at actual crime data?
According to Kerala Police data total cognizable crimes in the state were at their highest in 2016. After that the numbers started to decline reaching their lowest point around 2020 and 2021 most likely due to the pandemic. In 2023 crime peaked again almost reaching 2016 levels but then dipped in 2024.
So while there are fluctuations over the years the overall trend does not show a sustained increase in crime. If anything total cognizable crimes have reduced compared to the past. This means the argument that violent films are leading to rising crime does not really hold up against the data.
But if crime is not actually increasing then why does it feel like it is Is it because of more media coverage or the way social media amplifies incidents. Or has the incidents gotten more brutal? What do you think?
