Introduce someone to the world of cinema with 10 films:
Someone asks you to give them 10 films to start out watching more films. You have to give them: 5 foreign films and 5 English speaking films, what are you recommending? Here’s mine:
First 5 are foreign (one modern At least)Last 5 are English speaking (one modern At least) No films that are part of a trilogy/franchise
Reasoning for each: 1. La Haine 🇫🇷- A fantastic film that brings a light to contemporary issues in France. It’s short, it’s world renowned and gets the job done. 2. Yi Yi 🇨🇳 🇹🇼 - A beautiful film, the way it’s told, shot and visually told. I think everyone can learn something from this masterpiece. 3. Parasite 🇰🇷- This is my modern pick for obvious reasons, it was a global phenomenon by being the first international film to win Best Picture at the Oscar’s. The story is simple yet powerful. 4. City of God 🇧🇷- A powerful film that illustrates the world that is the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, contemporary issues being touched just like La Haine. 5. Ikiru 🇯🇵- This film’s story is one everyone should watch and experience. It makes you ask questions about life and what do YOU wanna do with it?
- Taxi Driver 🇺🇸- An ageless film and one of the first films I watched when I really began a cinephile. This movie is simple, short and has one of the best acting performances as well. I think it’s an excellent film for someone to pick up.
- Pulp Fiction 🇺🇸- A crime classic that is ageless with some of the best actors of its time. It’s well paced, it’s well done and it gets the job done. It’s a classic that has been regarded as one of the best ever.
- Apocalypse Now 🇺🇸- This is my pick if someone wants to be introduced into the War genre section. It’s a powerful film, it has some amazing shots of Vietnam and shines a light on the Vietnam war.
- Aftersun 🇺🇸- My modern pick for this section, I think this film is truly special. The story is beautiful yet heartbreaking and I think with modern times, a lot of people struggle with mental health issues so this is a great choice. It’ll bring some tears but it’s truly a beautiful story.
- The Silence of the Lambs 🇺🇸- My pick if someone wants a psychological horror. The last film to sweep the major 5 Academy Awards category and it’s a classic psychological film. Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster deliver masterclass performances and it’s a great introduction for the genre of horror.
