First time in LA

Hello LAMetro, I'm coming to Los Angeles for my first visit this weekend. I'm staying in West Hollywood and will be utilizing public transit. Is it safe to take Bus 217 to and from the Hollywood/Highland Metro Station? Also, should I take the express bus from LAX to union station when I arrive Friday morning?
