Was Deep Water the original Like That?
For anyone who hasn't heard it, Deep Water is a track by Dr Dre on his album Compton - inspired by the Straight Outta Compton biopic - and the track features Kendrick.
I remember playing it on repeat at the time. It's always interested me that the track has never fully been publicly seen or acknowledged as a clear Drake diss - which it definitely was:
- "Motherfucker know I started from the bottom" (or "no, I started from the bottom")
- "Once upon a time I shot a n**** on accident / I tried to kill him but I guess I needed more practicing" (a la "The very first time I shot me Drac/Drake..." on Euphoria)
- "They liable to bury him, they nominated Six to carry him"
- "The beef is on his breath, inheriting the drama better than a great white"
I think given what we know now with Like That, Kendrick tends to incite more directly on feature verses - maybe since the success of Control.
Do you think Deep Water was Kendrick's original attempt to start the beef? And why wasn't it successful?
