Favorite character and why?
My top 3 are interchangeable, so I’ll just say Mahito since he’s underrated compared to the other two. My main reasons for liking him are his penchant for growth, his mindset, and his cursed technique. I love the way that in every moment we see him, he is constantly learning and, in the process, going through self-discovery. His true form transformation was so hype for me. In most anime (that I’ve seen at least), we only see the MC and their friends grow, but JJK is the only one I’ve seen where the villains grow as well. At least Sukuna and Mahito.
That leads me to his mindset. Sukuna and Mahito basically have the same one: “I’ll do what I want just because I can.” They’re not identical because Mahito cares too much for Yuji. It’s why he lost in the end. I’m pretty positive that way of thinking is what makes him all the more stronger. He was born a special grade, but that mindset is what sets him above the other curses. I think Sukuna realized this, and it’s my belief that’s what was happening during the 0.2-second domain. It was game recognizing game. Mahito was doing what Sukuna thought Jogo should’ve done and was impressed. Not sure why people think that Sukuna in that scene wanted Yuji to kill Mahito because that’s completely out of character for him to think so. Sukuna wouldn’t have cared if Mahito lived or died, and he definitely wasn’t on Yuji’s side, but I digress. Also, Nanami compared him to Gojo in their first fight.
His domain states all of this as well. In Japanese, it's Jihei Edonka. Jihei means self and shut or closed. Edonka means to achieve enlightenment quickly. Mahito has two hand signs. One represents a deity with wisdom as infinite as space itself. His second-hand sign represents a deity with beauty and mastery of the arts. It's also a reference to Sheva the god of destruction.
Lastly, his cursed technique is just cool. It’s one of, if not the most potent one in the series, and the most versatile. Useful for combat and outside of combat. And the best defensively besides Infinity. If I had to choose one to have, it would be that one. If Mahito had survived to see Sukuna’s true form, he could’ve not only copied it but improved on it as well. Now give him chants, and he becomes completely broken.
He’s also kinda funny, ngl. He also high-mid diffs Jogo but that isn’t the point of the post.
