Why didn't Naoya help free Gojo?

Something I've wondered about Naoya is: wouldn't it have been smarter for him to help Gojo's students free him instead of trying to kill Megumi? If Gojo had been freed, he would have taken care of Megumi again, which would have nullified Naobito's deal. As a result, Megumi would no longer be the leader of the Zenin clan, and Naoya could have taken over as the clan leader without Megumi standing in his way.
