Should the leaf stay firm when you're trying to propagate it?

I am trying to propagate a jade from a leaf for the first time. I laid a leaf over some cactus soil with the callused end slightly nestled in the dirt. However a day or two in, the leaf is getting floppy and seems like it's just dying. Is this a problem? If so, what should I do?
