The “self help” hate bandwagon

I have come across a lot of posts/comments/content here on this sub where the self help category is bashed and it almost seems like the classic case of - “ half of the people detest the category because the other half does it”.

I truly get the idea that most writers have milked the self help category and there have been way too many books written about it with the same leitmotif time and again. I even understand that the percentage of such writers, who see the category as a cash cow or a low hanging fruit, could be relatively higher. But then, such “low effort and useless” books exist in all categories.

In my opinion and as per my observation the bashing the self help gets is disproportionate. There truly are really good self help books which are practical guides or have some ideas or practices that click for a lot of people and help them at a time when they truly might need it. Not all the books offer everything. Sometimes, it’s just one page or one paragraph or heck even one line in an entire freaking book that we remember which leaves a lasting impact on us.

To people who have been unequivocally vocal about their dislike for self help, I genuinely want to ask if they have never found any self book helpful obviously after having read them or is our opinion just based on the superficial bandwagon of opinions of others and we just hop on?

Edit : I like the collective downvotes. Keep em coming you bibliophile pookies 🫂♥️
