The Official AMA with retiring WLRH Public Radio Director Brett Tannehill
Greetings! My name is Brett Tannehill, the retiring Director of Radio at WLRH 89.3 Huntsville, bringing an end to a 27 year journey through the public radio universe. I started as a journalist at Alabama Public Radio in Tuscaloosa, where my basic function was to roam Alabama and the South searching out 'the untold story' about all sorts of things, including natural disasters, capital punishment, civil rights, the environment and even Alabama football from the Dubose years to Saban's first national championship (ironically, those were some of the most grueling 30 hours in my reporting career). I also spent several years as a producer for master storyteller Kathryn Tucker Windham, which will always be a career highlight for me. In late 2010, I was hired as Program Director at WLRH and in the first 6 months saw Huntsville get hit with a paralyzing ice storm and two weekends of devastating tornadoes in April of 2011. Soon after, I was promoted to General Manager and a few years later to Director of Radio. At WLRH, we've worked to support Tennessee Valley arts and culture and our amazing non-profit community while meeting the challenge of finding ways for 'liberal' public radio to survive in one of America's most conservative and competitive listening audiences ... which we've done so far. I feel pretty well suited to answer most any question about WLRH or the public radio system, so hopefully you have things you want to know. Thanks for joining my AMA. I hope we all learn things together and have a few laughs. Cheers.
