almost dead horses for sale?

hi everyone, i haven't played this game since probably 2014 and at that point i was a pretty casual player. i was looking at some cheap horses to buy since i saw people talk about ap farms (which was never something i wouldve thought about) and i saw the three horses i bought have extremely low health? is that normal? also why are a lot of the horses named ap/automated purchase? thanks in advance!
