The “Red Oak Situation”
20 year old red oak floor got sanded and stained with weathered oak (pic shows samples L to R fruitwood, early American, driftwood, golden oak, weathered oak). Since we are newbies and dealing with an entire house reno and the flooring guys didn’t say anything…the floor turned out totally pink/red. No finish applied yet thankfully. Going to re-sand and stain again with something else. After spending 30 minutes on this great page I was able to figure out the issues with red oak and the need to bring in some green to wash out the reds. And will need to go darker for sure.
We are thinking of (Duraseal) Jacobean, Early American, Special Walnut, Provincial or 50/50 special walnut/classic gray and water based satin poly. Are we on the right track? Do they need to water pop first? I think they conditioned before the weathered oak stain.
