Shaping

At what point on the process do you guys shape and how do you know when to stop lol. I'm at this point where I'm gluing on a tip, shaping it, doing builder gel, shaping a little more, and even still shaping after putting on top coat. And it's like I'm chasing rainbows, I get one finger how I want it and the next thing I know the finger on the opposite hand is the wrong length and shape and I'm going in circles 😮 am I crazy lol does this happen to other people
