Does Anybody Else Hate Prequels? (And Why Are They Great?)

I've never quite understood them. For me, a big part of the lure of a fantasy story is wondering how it will end. The prequel doesn't have that. We already know where the story is going. The tension is sapped out.

This also gives me an aversion to books like The Name of the Wind, where a character talks about what happened to them in the past. Again, we know where they ended up, so the sense of mystery is lessened.

We have Amazon making a prequel TV show for Lord of the Rings, HBO making a prequel show for Game of Thrones. But why? Why not make something new? Why not make shows about what happened AFTER?

So my question is, how do you feel about prequels?

And would you prefer getting a prequel, a sequel, or a mix of both?
