Marketing oversimplified for someone just starting out

Over the past few years, I've been the first or only marketing hire, which was both exciting and a bit intimidating. I remember those early days—figuring out how to pick my battles wisely and prove the value of marketing (and my own) to leadership. To help guide me through, I started creating a playbook that became my go-to reference for every new project.

I call it "Marketing Oversimplified." It’s my way of helping founders or other non-marketers on the team understand the basics while also giving me a clear blueprint to follow. It keeps me on track, especially when things around me are anything but structured.

The reason it’s called "oversimplified" is that it’s not meant to be a "one size fits all" solution. Instead, it serves as an excellent starting point—a foundation that gives me structure when I need it most.

Here’s the flow of the playbook, which I’ll dive into in detail moving forward (if y’all are interested!):

  1. Market Research (Understanding the Landscape)
  2. Messaging & Positioning (What Do We Stand For?)
  3. Brand Guidelines (Consistency is Key)
  4. Building the Team (The Right People Matter)
  5. Revamping Sales and Marketing Materials (Get the Basics Right)
  6. Customer Journey Mapping (Understanding the Experience)

This is where I start. :) Is this something you guys would like to know more about?
