My (lower budget) wedding band arrived today and I’m worried that it’s too thin/dainty
Please excuse my dry old lady hands, it’s cold in the UK at the moment and my skin is suffering.
We’ve booked an elopement package wedding for next year, it will just be my fiancé and I and our toddler daughter in attendance.
We’ve been together 7 years but other priorities such as the never ending maintenance of our Victorian house and having our daughter have delayed us getting married.
We chose an elopement package wedding because neither of us are fans of being in the spotlight, plus we’re trying to keep costs to a minimum but still create a magical romantic day for ourselves.
I have fairly small hands and didn’t want my rings to be too big or bulky, and as I work in environment and sustainability, I wanted something ethical and not with a massive carbon footprint. My style is typically very feminine (think long flowy skirts and dresses) and I don’t like lots of bling.
I had my engagement ring custom made by a London-based ethical seller on Etsy and I absolutely adore it. It’s a 6mm round aquamarine stone (my daughter’s birthstone) in a 1.9mm width 10k white gold band, and cost under £250! The Celtic design was exactly what I wanted, and it feels lovely to wear. It’s a UK size K or US size 5.25.
Because I was so happy with my engagement ring, I went back to the same seller to order my wedding band and this time just chose an existing one from their Etsy shop rather than a custom order. It’s a 1.77mm band with tiny bezel set 0.07ctw diamonds, and cost a little under £150. I did read all the specs and looked carefully at the images on Etsy, and it looked like it would compliment my Celtic engagement ring without overpowering it.
Well the ring arrived today and while it’s definitely as described, so no fault of the seller, I was a little taken aback at just how dainty/thin the band is. I don’t know why, but I suppose I didn’t fully take on board the difference between the 1.9mm and 1.77mm bands, and was expecting the wedding band to look almost the same thickness as the engagement ring.
That being said, I’ve worn both rings together for a few hours today just to get used to them together, and I think I do like the wedding band. I quite like how when they’re nestled together they sort of blend to look like one ring, and the diamonds in the band create a lovely very subtle sparkle when they catch the light behind the aquamarine ring.
But then I second guess myself and wonder if the wedding band is overpowered too much and maybe I won’t even look like I’m married without a more noticeable wedding band.
I’ve also lurked a little on this sub and have seen that dainty bands have a tendency to get damaged more easily. I did consider this before ordering but thought it would be okay, because my engagement ring from this seller definitely feels pretty sturdy and high quality so I sort of expected this one to match. I’m pretty careful with my jewelry and take it off before showering/exercising/sleeping etc., but still I’m aware that thin bands aren’t ideal for longevity.
So anyway, I would be interested in people’s thoughts on the two rings together and if you think I should potentially keep shopping for a different wedding band. Although I’d rather not spend more money than I have to, I could technically afford to buy something else and keep this band just as a stacking ring for my other hand (I don’t really want to return it as I do really like it). I also have plenty of time to find another ring.
Thank you!
