I need help with multiplayer co-op. I'm a noob

I followed several tutorials. I used the Furlcalling finger remedy and my friend used the Tarnished furled finger and we use the same password and nothing happens or appears. I've seen people just use the finger remedy with no password to connect with random players but when I do it nothing happens
