Small amount of discharge + dryness in one nostril
Small amount of discharge + dryness in one nostril of dog
Hi all,
My dog has been experiencing some discharge from his left nostril for about 2 weeks now - for which I have taken him in to the vets twice.
It was initially worse, a little green and more of it. The vet did a swab and it came back indicating a bacterial infection so we initially put him on broad spectrum antibiotics for 5 days, though the vet pointed out that it’s odd to be just from one nostril and that this usually indicates a foreign body of some kind.
There seemed to be less of it and it even appeared to go away initially, but then it came back. We’re trying antibiotics again but for 10 days this time, but we’ve nearly reached that 10 day point and it’s not gone (though it is a little better).
I’ve been advised that if it doesn’t go away I need to look at a CT scan or Rhinoscopy (or both) and they’re extremely expensive. I’m just wondering if anyone has experienced something similar and if there are other options for treatment, like would an xray show a foreign body, tumour, polyp etc.
He’s a near 12 year old male Border Collie. Other than the small amount of discharge and dryness around that nostril there are no other symptoms. He doesn’t sneeze more than usual, he doesn’t paw at it and his breathing isn’t affected. There’s no swelling and he seems to not be in any pain. His teeth are great so it’s not that either.
What seems to be an odd coincidence to me that it’s on his left side only - and he lost most of the muscle in his face on this side about 2 years ago (complete medical mystery, never found the cause and it doesn’t affect his body eating or playing and no pain involved, just loss of muscle). I wonder if that long term muscle atrophy could have done something to the nasal passages?
Obviously I’ll have to do what’s needed for him and come up with the money somehow. I’m just wondering if there are any alternatives. Seems like such a small thing but I know that it could indicate something much more serious. I just am unsure about spending thousands on a possible diagnosis alone.
