"Do you touch it?"

Curious how others handle the common question "do you touch it?" and the like. Trapped doors, cursed items, monster ambushes, all make for really cool moments but they can turn awkward quickly. It feels like tightrope walking between getting so detailed the players know something is up vs not giving enough details for the surprise to feel fair.

One of my most recent cases of this was when my players entered a cave they knew would have monsters waiting to ambush them. There was an awkward 10-15 mins of them talking about but not committing to any action.
