Today marks 50 years since the Moorgate Tube Crash of 1975, where operator Leslie Newson inexplicably crashed into the end-of-line overrun tunnel at high speed, destroying the train and killing 43 people, himself included. Why the crash occurred remains a mystery to this day. February 28th, 1975.
