Let go of my cats prey

So this morning my cat had brought in a bird to kill, chasing it around the house until it got away and sat beside our front door, after some time I decided to let it go and open the door. I'm not sure whether that was the right choice as I don't want my cat to hate me, If anyone has advice please help :)
