What would you get as your first automatic car in 2025?

Hello,

I’m currently doing my auto lessons, and I’m looking to buy my first car after I pass my test.

I’ve spent genuine hours today trying to look at a suitable car to buy but I’m still very unsure. I had my mind set on a Vauxhall Astra 1.6 16v Exclusiv Auto Euro 5 (2012) but I’m reading some bad reviews about the car and Vauxhall in general. Mainly just on Reddit though… It’s around £5k, good size, interior looks better than (in my opinion) similar cars, and ticks all boxes to be honest. Anyone had any experience?

My max budget is £7,500. Ideally I’d like to buy a car for £4-6k.

Insurance is already at £2.5k (ish) for a 1.6 Astra and around £1k with black box.

What would you buy or recommend?

My requirements: 5 door. Suitable for family use (0-3 year olds). Trips will mostly be in cities and towns, but will travel somewhat “far” on weekends. Prefer to have a nice interior. Prefer to have a body shape like the Astra, rather than a Smart type car.

I’m 23 and first time driver.

I’m seeing Toyota Yaris pop up loads, but looking at them on auto trader, the dials are in the middle which is a massive no for me.

Another option - Honda Jazz. I’m seeing 2009-2012 cars for around £5-6k but I’m unsure which models I should be avoiding or looking for? Such as Ex CVT or Ex I-Shift. I don’t know what they even mean.

Another option - VW Polo or Golf. Should I be looking the at DSG, BlueMotion, or any other models?

Another option - Ford Focus. I’ve read quite a few reviews to avoid the Zetec Powershift model but the “only” other model is the Titanium and most of them include the Powershift in the name too?

Desperate/“stupid” option: Purchase a £10k (ish) Audi A3, or BMW 1 series. What would be better (model, litre, etc?).

I’m out of ideas and I would genuinely appreciate if someone could take the time to explain what all these variants are, and what I should be looking for? Any recommendations or advice is appreciated too.

I just need a car that’s going to last 3-5 years at least and will little to no issues. I’m happy to spend £ whenever necessary to maintain the the best condition, regardless if it’s £10 parts or £300 major services.

Thank you.
