General advice, looking to become a first time gun owner

Hi, I’m 26F and interested in getting my first firearm. I’ve been considering this purchase for a while as I prefer to live rurally but a developing stalker situation has me ready to move forward with the process (I am home alone several nights a week and just do not feel as safe as I used to). I don’t really know anyone who can advise me on this kind of thing so I’m just looking for any guidance. What is a reasonable starter firearm? What does the process look like (generally) from start to finish? I understand that you take an FSC exam before you can purchase a gun? Thank you for any help!
