Heathrow disruption / what to expect next / missed tier points
I was due to fly last night on the 21.30 LHR to DOH flight and then on to HKG. The business class flight was booked with BA but operated by Qatar. It was to be the first part of a business trip with subsequent flights to SIN and SYD and then back to LHR, using a mix of Cathay and Qantas.
Once I was aware of the Heathrow shut down at 6am I attempted to start making alternative plans (I.e. a flight to DOH from elsewhere in the UK). I was able to speak with Qatar relatively quickly who seemed confident that they could help until they established that my ticket had been bought from BA which meant that they couldn’t help me. I eventually managed to get through to BA at around 10.30. They tried to check for alternatives but eventually told me that there was no way to get me to HKG until Monday/Tuesday next week. Their eventual guidance was that I would need to wait for my flight to be officially cancelled and then they would contact me to proceed with a refund or alternative plans.
As a contingency, i then booked a new flight with Qantas from LHR to SIN on Sunday night so that I could salvage at least part of my business trip. This was done on the assumption that my original BA ticket would be cancelled and a refund received.
At 15.30 yesterday I was finally informed by Qatar that my flight was cancelled. As things stand at 07.05 the next morning I have still not received any correspondence from BA confirming the cancellation and next steps.
My first question is therefore what to expect from BA from here? Is anyone else stuck in limbo with them? I appreciate that they are dealing with an unprecedented situation here and that getting people back to the UK is probably their priority, but it would be nice to have an expectation of what follows.
My second question, which is rather more trivial in nature, relates to tier points. With the tier points I was expecting to earn on this trip, I was going to hit gold status. Now, due to less tier points being received from LHR-SIN than LHR-DOH-HKG and the cancellation of the HKG-SIN leg of the trip, I will be 40 points short at the end of the trip (29/03/25), just before the end of the collection year. Is there any prospect of BA using their discretion to grant me some additional points to reach the threshold given the cancellation, or is this likely to be a non starter?
