My nonverbal 2-year-old got kicked out of daycare
My son is sweet and harmless, but he doesn't understand spoken words and doesn't really speak. We signed him up for a home daycare two weeks ago as his mum has just started chemo. The lady who runs this place contacted us through Facebook after my partner posted on a local community page explaining our situation. She's qualified and is running an actual business, and was fully booked out except for the one day we needed. We had a meet & greet a couple weeks ago to discuss our son and his needs, and she said she has lots of experience with nonverbal kids and with autism (our son isn't diagnosed yet but probably will be soon. She said she was confident she could work with him, even after we described his challenges and predicted that his first few days would probably be difficult.
He's been twice. First day, he was happy on arrival, happy when we picked him up, and from the app updates, was happy pretty much all day (he just didn't sleep, which we said would happen for a while). Second day, he cried a lot when I dropped him off, but she said he calmed down within 10 minutes when she put some music on. Didn't sleep again, which was unsurprising. Again, he was happy when I picked him up. She raised no real concerns with us during any of the pick-ups or drop-offs.
Thursday was his most recent day there. Saturday she emails my partner saying she can't have him there any more because "his screaming makes the other children cry." Then she blocked both of us on Facebook. My partner emailed back saying that it's very disappointing that she's made this decision when he hasn't even had a chance to settle in yet, and without talking to us about it at all.
The lady then responded with a pretty abrasive email that basically tried to pin all the blame on us because we didn't give her enough warning about his needs (we did), and listing every minor inconvenience she's suffered as a result of him being there. For example, last week (on his first day) we didn't pack the right sleeping bag for him (which he doesn't actually need and it wouldn't have made him sleep that day anyway), and on Thursday he ate some dirt and she apparently can't supervise the other two kids well enough if she has to try and make sure he isn't eating things. My son sometimes chews on things. He's two. One of the kids she has enrolled on another day is an actual baby, and you might think that for $200+ a day per child she could consider that monitoring the safety of the 3-4 kids at her house is literally what we're fucking paying her for.
Sorry for the rant. TLDR: Home daycare lady only wants to look after kids who don't require any of her attention.
