Review/Rave: Killer Krust Pizza
I am oh so happy.
Today Killer Krust appeared on DD and I was intrigued because a new pizza place is not the most common thing to pop up. We get plenty of new taco/burrito shops and a new fast food joint every quarter mile they can fit one. But pizza has been pretty set in stone.
Selection wise the menu had some solid offerings: Salads, Pizza, Calzones, Subs, all your standard pizzeria fare. I would have liked to see a chicken parm sub on the menu but from what I read they've only been open 2 months, so there's hope yet. But the gold standard to judge a place like this to me is on a proper cheese slice.
The prices were kinda high but honestly between the DD markup and Athens market rate it isn't out of the norm. 27$ for a large pie on DD vs 21$ in store per the menu they have on Facebook. Not cheap, but if its a quality pie not a price I'm above paying.
I ordered a large BYO pizza, got it plain with the well done option and hoped for the best. It arrived in a reasonable time-frame still pretty hot. As soon as I opened the box I was greeted by a delicious looking thin NY style pie with perfect ratios of cheese/crust/sauce the way they would look back home in NJ.
It was love at first bite. Everything you want a proper NY slice or pie to be, this is. The crust is correct, crisp, and slim. It has the right aeration in the dough with the right chew. A symphony of texture.
The cheese was not sliding off and while there was some visible oiliness to it, it was not overly greasy. You could also see that the pie was seasoned by the flecks on the cheese. I think KK also offers seasoned/brushed crusts but that wasn't my objective today so mine was just standard.
Sauce may be the most neutral point on this review. The pizza was appropriately sauced, though some may like it a bit heavier. It was definitely seasoned well and tasted like a proper pizza sauce but was not overly sweet or tangy as some I've had.
Overall as an NJ native this is what I would call an 8.5 / 10 pizza, with nothing else I've tried in Athens getting above a mid-7. This is the kind of pie that could hold its own in my hometown and no one would think twice about ordering it.
If you like a good NY style pie, I recommend you get yourself over to Killer Krust ASAP.
