What Am I doing wrong?

Picture of the old outlet first. It had a ground wire not attached to the outlet & just going around a screw inside. The black & white wires were each attached to the outlet.

The new motion sensor switch I hooked up the boxes white & black wires each to one of the outlets black wires. I hooked the bare copper ground to the outlets green & bare silver wire.

There’s power there and the light is on with this configuration, but if I hit the switch it doesn’t turn off like it’s supposed to. It seems to be permanently on.

It’s not the outlet because I’ve tried two.

Thoughts?? Help please. Thanks!
