Becoming an apprentice in Canada as an international student.

I'm an international student in a pre apprenticeship program for electricians in Ontario. I don't have any prior electrician experience. Once I graduate I'll have a one year post graduate work permit. I just started but I want to find out as much as I can about my options. What is the path for international students becoming apprentices? The Canadian government keeps talking about the need for trade workers but the immigration system is a bureaucratic labyrinth. I'm having a hard time finding someone with the specific knowledge for my situation or an immigrant who went through the process themselves. Any Canadians out there familiar with the trades and immigration, please help
