Should our government officials still be using Twitter to communicate to the Canadian public?
I am not on Twitter (I refuse to call it 'X', because it's lame). I am constantly frustrated seeing important information directed at the Canadian public from our government announced on Twitter. Two examples: Ford posting about canceling the Starlink contract and even more importantly, Trudeau announcing the 30-day pause in tariffs. Remember Elon's 'Girl, you're not the Governor of Canada anymore', or whatever to a post by Trudeau? I wanted to kick Musk in the shins for disrespecting our highest elected office.... but why was our PM opened up to that BS anyway?
Recent data shows that only 8% of Canadians are active on Twitter. But, the cascading effect is that then the posting on Twitter is then reported in other sources including conventional media. I've noted tweets embedded here even. In the meantime, Twitter is a cesspool. The RCMP constantly has their hands full from the literal death threats lobbed in that forum to politicians of all stripes.
My point is, WHY is our PM or any other elected official, or government department (WHY Parks Canada???), using the platform owned by someone who has made clear he is not friendly to Canada to communicate to Canadians? I think this should STOP. I think all elected officials need to get off of Twitter and to strengthen their relationships again with local media. Twitter lobbies the Canadian government hard. The government SPENDS money on Twitter and with Meta to reach Canadians. Should we send a message that we want to be reached in other ways?
Do you think it's a good idea to start a petition asking Canadian government officials to get off Twitter and return to communicating with Canadians unmediated by the corrupted platform of a deranged billionaire?
