Do women just get to have gynecologist checkups?

It's seen as a normal thing in movies and tv shows (latest example is at the end of the Barbie movie) that women can just see a gynecologist to make sure their vag is normal. In my country you don't get a gynecologist unless a regular GP deems something is seriously wrong and too complicated for them to treat and sends a referral. Which is frustrating because they seem to always think everything is normal, because they aren't specialists and vaginas are weird and different.
