What avenues do the Democratic Party Senators and Representatives have against Trump and Musk?
At this point, DOGE is bypassing every check and balance. The Federal Court system is likely the only thing the Democrats have as a legal Avenue to stop Musk from firing every government employee. His buyout option is fucked because if people do take it it might be seen as “well the government didn’t fire the person, the person made a choice to take a buyout”. If it does get to SCOTUS I would guess Gorsuch and Roberts might flip to the Liberal Justices’ side but that’s just a guess.
We haven’t even had time to process legislation. It feels as though the filibuster is the only way to stop Republican legislation. It likely is going to be used sparingly, or if it’s used a lot maybe there will be something procedural that bypasses it.
There is also deal making, which is difficult to do when you don’t trust the opposition to uphold their end of the deal. Things like “I’ll vote yes on this if you vote yes on what I want”. No one in the Minority seems to have enough leverage to pull votes from the Republicans. But then again getting rid of the ACA broke because Republicans couldn’t decide what to replace it with, but that was self defeating.
The problem I see with the Democrats is that they care about the government and the Republicans don’t. So when it comes to threats like shutting down the government by not raising the debt ceiling, the Republicans kind of like that because it allows them to shutdown the federal government. (It’s idiotic, but it seems like something they don’t mind as much as Democrats)
Then we get to the Supreme Court which with 6-3 majority to conservatives, the best course the democrats have is send cases that are double edge swords like RBG did with cases back when she was a lawyer. Deciding for or against needs to give some ground to the Democrats.
What other tools do the Democratic Party politicians have access to to help against this current administration?
