Do you get denied healthcare?

I'm an American asking and I have paid thousands to an insurance company for years in addition to thousands to my own government. My insurance company denied paying my claim for an emergency room visit....because I went to the wrong one? Is universal healthcare as awful as the American government tells us it is?
