Chronic illness and mental health care in Spain
I’m strongly considering moving to Spain via a DNV. One of my main concerns, though, is access to healthcare and mental health prescription meds, since I am chronically ill with Long Covid and sensitive to a lot of meds.
I’m currently on 8 medicines for depression, insomnia, migraine, ADHD, etc. and take about 12 supplements as well. Normal SSRIs make me more anxious, so my psychiatrist has developed this combination of multiple low-dose meds for me over many years, and with it I’m able to function very well. Along with that, my long covid presents with a bunch of symptoms I need to check in with various doctors for (cardiology, urology, neurology, in particular) and I have chronic pain that does best with ongoing PT and other interventions.
So my questions are these: is there any chance that my illnesses mean I wouldn’t qualify for the private insurance required with a DNV? Are there out-of-the-box psychiatrists in Spain who would prescribe the meds I'm on or help me find a similar mix, if any of my meds are restricted there? And if not, are there other legal options—working with a US doctor and overseas pharmacies, working with a Swiss psychiatrist, or something like that?
Thanks, all, for your thoughts. I’d love for Spain to be an option for me, and this is one of my biggest concerns about the move.
