Free iPhone 15 to compensate for internet issues?

Hi! Earlier today I had issues with my internet that a technician came out and resolved. About an hour later an At&T representative showed up at my condo and told me that to make up for my issues AT&T would give me a free iPhone 15 with a reduced monthly rate than I’m paying now. The whole thing is very weird, but I said okay, honestly for just the reduced monthly rate.

He went out to his car to get the new phone and I’m waiting for him right now. Has this happened to anyone else?? He said it’s a new initiative to keep customers but what’s the catch?
