Outcomes of ADHD medication (Vyvanse) during pregnancy
Hello all,
I want to preface this by stating I'm not asking for medical advice, I'm hoping to get input from others who have been in the same situation to learn about their experiences. This is also cross-posted as I'm hoping to get input from as many people as possible.
I have been diagnosed with ADHD for 20+ years, and for a while my symptoms have been well managed with therapy, self-care/exercise, and Vyvanse. I am now (11 weeks) pregnant and really wrestling with continuing my prescribed Vyvanse during pregnancy. I have consulted with my OB, a perinatal psychiatrist, and maternal fetal medicine, who all agreed/recommended I continue on Vyvanse during pregnancy. We did lower my dose to 40mg/day, and I only take it on days I really need at at work (about 1/2 the days of the week).
Despite being reassured (as much as possible with limited evidence) by my psychiatrist, MFM, and OB that it is okay for me to take this in pregnancy, I have so much guilt every time I take the medication. I worry that I am doing long-term, permanent damage or creating permanent negative changes to the baby. In particular, I am worried about long term negative neurochemical and behavioral impacts of the medication on the baby - that it will contribute to mood disorders, emotional disregulation, memory/concentration/cognitive challenges, or other similar negative outcomes for my child.
I know there is limited data on this, especially regarding longer-term outcomes. I'm hoping to hear from individuals who have also continued to take their amphetamine-based ADHD medication (Adderall, Vyvanse) and what their experience has been like with their children after birth. Have you noticed any developmental, emotional, behavioral concerns as your child grows? Any experience you can share (positive or negative or neutral) would be SO much appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your help and support.
