Late 2000s 4x4s with decent fuel economy

I used to have a 05 4runner hopped up with a lift and big tires which killed on gas (10mpg), now I have a vibe as I’m driving over 8 hours into the states bi weekly. I’m looking to go back to a 4x4 as I like occasional offroading+winters are pretty bad here, although I’ll still need to be driving a ton so it can’t be anything to awful on gas or unreliable. Wanting to keep it pre 2010s as I like to do the mechanical work myself and new cars suck for that. Any ideas?
